Here, owners lived in the back of their shops, plastic lawn chairs and tables spilled out into the streets, old ladies sold tomatoes and peppers on the ground, and young men squatted around smoking.
I sat on a stool in art class, balancing a white pad of paper on my lap, preparing to sketch the pots, pans, and apples laid out under the harsh artificial lighting of a desk lamp. In that concentrated moment, a classmate arrives through the door, “Guys! I have to tell you about the coolest website ever.”

As a kindergartener, I stopped by the newsstand every week to pick up the Chinese equivalent of Highlights, which had fascinating content to last a week and the visual and tactile appeal to make me flip cover-to-cover multiple times with no apparent burnout.
Today, I start documenting the sentences I throw out from whatever I’m writing - whether they are extraneous, not quite what I mean, or all-around funky; but that I don’t want to abandon forever.
