I do not doubt for a second that those involved in KONY 2012 have great intentions, nor…

Is awareness good? Yes. But these problems are highly complex, not one-dimensional and, frankly, aren’t of the nature that can be solved by postering, film-making and changing your Facebook profile picture, as hard as that is to swallow. Giving your money and public support to Invisible Children so they can spend it on supporting ill-advised violent intervention and movie #12 isn’t helping. Do I have a better answer? No, I don’t, but that doesn’t mean that you should support KONY 2012 just because it’s something. Something isn’t always better than nothing. Sometimes it’s worse.
Another perspective to take in.
The way KONY2012 is blowing up on the Internet is awe-inspiring, but also quite scary. Activism and being attuned to hype are characteristics special to the youth. With digital technology/social media, crowdsourcing, impeccably-designed content as the “new normal” - we’re seeing the activism and hype in youth amplified big time.
I’m most concerned with the fact that it almost seems like you can’t say no.
Like if you don’t support KONY2012, you don’t believe in justice, don’t believe in change, and are actively discounting your influence as an individual.
I don’t want to be quick to call it so, but Group-think comes to mind - symptoms of which include:
- overestimation of the group’s power and morality Overestimations of the group—its power and morality
- closed-mindedness
- pressures towards uniformity
Either way, KONY2012 is a cultural phenomenon and one we should pay attention - and it’s pretty hard not to at this point. I’ll be the first to admit that I did NOT know who in the world Joseph Kony was, and for this, KONY2012 is important. Going viral is a blessing and a curse. Now that we know, people will react - and ideally, in more ways than one.
